Here we are, one year into a global COVID-19 pandemic and so many things have changed for so many people.  So many people have passed away, and many.many more are mourning their loss.  And despite all that, the babies keep on coming and expectant families are still desiring information and taking childbirth classes to prepare and birth with confidence.

Many of our classes use and/or include information about the Six Healthy Birth Practices - a set of six evidence-based guidelines that support healthy birth that follows best practices and that is the foundation of Lamaze International.

As educators, while we may still be sharing information about the Six Healthy Birth Practices, we need to be aware of how things are changing (for better or worse) for families giving birth during the time of this COVID-19 pandemic.

Being informed about current situations can help families better prepare for birthing in the time of COVID-19 and still plan for a birth that aligns with the Six Healthy Birth Practices.  Being informed in advance on how things might be different at their chosen facility and with their health care provider leads to smart and aware consumers.  Our job as educators is to help them to get there!

Debby Amis is a long-time childbirth educator who has served in many leadership roles in Lamaze, including President of the Lamaze Board and Education Council Chair. Debby is a registered nurse, DONA-Certified Doula, LCCE, and FACCE currently serving on the Lamaze Certification Council.
