To close out National Breastfeeding Month in the United States, it is only appropriate to have August's Brilliant Activities for Birth Educators be focused on an activity focused on breast/chestfeeding.  Additionally, since many people are still needing to conduct virtual classes due to COVID-19 risks in their communities, I decided to offer up something that can be done either virtually  or in person, depending on your own circumstances.  Please enjoy this simple and quick breast/chestfeeding quiz that you can share with your classes.  To find all our monthly Brilliant Activities for Birth Educators, follow this link.

Introduction

Many people have a lot of misconceptions and misinformation about lactation and human milk.  It is fun and interactive to offer up a quick quiz for families to take to see how much they know.  Taking a quiz online is fun, quick and reinforces information that is important for them to know,

Materials

This (or any other of your choice) breast/chestfeeding online quiz

The quiz linked here is free for you to use in your classes.  All you need to do is go to this link and save a copy to your own Google Drive.  From there you can use the quiz as is, or add or delete both questions and images.  The questions are modified from the Ontario Public Health Association Breastfeeding Promotion Work Group.

When to conduct this activityI like to have this activity done just as I am starting the class, right before we head into discussing breast/chestfeeding.  It is a nice way for families to see how much they already know before you even start the topic.  An alternative would be to do it as a follow up after the lacation class, to determine how much information  was retained.  There is no wrong way to do it.

How to do the activity

You can ask the families to do this quiz by themselves, in small groups in breakout rooms (if available on your conferencing platform) or as an entire class.  Send everyone the link in your platform chat and ask them to head over and take the quiz, assigning breakout rooms first if that is what you have decided,  Let them work on the quiz first, without your guidance.  The quiz is set up to give them a score and show them the right answers, but you can change that functionality.  Come together as a whole class,  and review or answer questions that they might have.  I allow about 10 minutes to do the entire activity including whole group review.

What do families say about this activity

Families enjoy testing their knowledge and seeing how many questions they can answer correctly.  The images help normalize and reinforce that breast/chestfeeding is a normal activity that they will be doing with their newborns.

How can you modify this activity

You can modify any questions or images to be specific to the demographics of your classes (teen parents, single parents, etc).  You can have a competition and award small prizes for the top score.  You could even divide up support people and pregnant people and have them compete against each other.  You could even invite your class to *create(* a quiz!  There are many ways for you to use this material.

Conclusion

Virtual classes do not need to be boring and all lecture.  Using quizzes can be a fun, enagaging and interactive way to teach material or review material.  Quizzes are easy to make in many platforms (Kahoot, Poll Everywhere, Mentimeter and more), but this link will let you use or modify this free Google Forms quiz for your own purposes!
