If you're a new parent of a new baby, you may not yet know that doing things with a new baby in tow is infinitely easier now, when they aren't mobile and still sleep a lot. In 10-12 months from now, watch out... and maybe, get a sitter. In consideration of this current phase of life, we want to offer some new baby- and postpartum-friendly date ideas for you and your partner this Valentine's Day.
Date night in, with help. A date night in when you have a new baby is almost always going to be easier and more relaxed. To make it feel special (as opposed to just another night at home), consider getting baby care help from someone you feel safe with. This way, you'll be able to relax a bit more and focus on each other as a couple. Be sure to set boundaries with your caregiver, for example asking to bring baby to you only for feedings. Put some thought into your date night activities to make it feel more like a true date. Consider ideas like game night, movie night, cooking together, painting/crafting together, make it a spa night, or one of these fun ideas.
Movie theatre*. Depending on your baby's temperament (good, sound, long sleeper vs. fussy and up a lot), seeing a movie at the theatre may be a good option for date night. If baby needs to be fed, it's easy to do it right in the theatre. Worst case, baby gets too fussy and you have to leave -- it may be worth the risk for a night out! *Not all states have movie theatres open. In this case, opt for a movie night in!
Museum/gallery. A local museum or art gallery lends itself well to a fun and stimulating experience that can easily accommodate a newborn in a carrier/sling or stroller.
Go for a drive. If there's a scenic area near you, take a long drive and explore new and familiar sights, all from the comfort of your car and hopefully while baby sleeps in the backseat. Bring along dinner and park somewhere peaceful while you enjoy a meal in the car, or if the weather is nice, an outdoor picnic.
Walk and talk. Put baby in the stroller or in an age-appropriate sling or soft carrier and hit the streets, whether around your neighborhood, a nearby park, or drive to a local trail or state park. The fresh air, weather permitting of course, will do you all good. Plus, a nice walk is a great time to chat with your partner -- or enjoy each other's presence in silence.
Bowling. Bowling, in theory, is new baby friendly. So many bowling alleys now offer comfortable seating around your lane, which helps for feedings. Plus, you can usually have food ordered to your spot. The ambient noise means that a fussy baby will blend right in. Even if you only fit in one game, it's a great way to get out.
Classical music concert... at home. Live events like concerts are still a ways off thanks to Covid concerns, but you can always order a concert to play right in the comfort of your own living room. Check your favorite streaming services for a recorded concert of your choice.
Picnic. Sometimes the simplest things are the most enjoyable. Make a picnic lunch -- or order food from your favorite sandwich shop -- and take it to a spot that offers good views and a comfortable place to lay a blanket.
How will you celebrate Valentine's Day with your partner and your new baby?
