Giving Birth with Confidence

A Review of the New Online Labor Pain Management Course from Lamaze

A Review of the New Online Labor Pain Management Course from Lamaze

Cara Terreri, LCCE, CD(DONA)

Last year, Lamaze created and released its first-ever online childbirth education courses. The courses allow you to learn at your own pace and in the comfort of your own home. They are broken into different topics and cover a range of issues that help families prepare for birth and breastfeeding. Information from the classes is best understood and retained when you also attend an in-depth, in-person childbirth class (either before or afterward). Recently, Lamazed released perhaps one of the most anticipated topics surrounding childbirth: labor pain mangement. In the new online course, "Labor Pain Management: Techniques for Comfort and Coping," you will find extensive information on the wide range of coping measures for childbirth, including breathing, massage and touch, position changes, tips for back labor, and other key information to keep labor progressing and as comfortable as possible.

The class is divided into the different stages of labor so that you can learn coping measures as they might be needed in labor. In addition to informative images and short, easy-to-understand text, the online class engages you throughout the class, making it truly "interactive." There are multiple recorded teaching sessions, where the instructor shares different types of breathing and sounds helpful during labor, as well as video clips. You can also follow along with the narrative of Michele and Jeremy's birth story. Short snippets of their story are shared throughout the class during relevant sections. At the end of each section, you are prompted with a practice reminder and are invited to take a short quiz to review the material and test your understanding.

The other great part about the course is the dashboard, which links you to printable resources and a discussion board by topic, allows you to take notes in each section, and provides the opportunity to send a question directly to a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator.
